Anyone who has listened to any of Ed’s podcasts over the last two years knows how much value he thinks there is to be gained from leveraging both the cloud and the edge for data processing in IoT systems and applications. So when we saw an article entitled “The Dynamic Duo of the IoT—Combining Cloud & Edge Processing Gives the Best of Both Worlds,” we had to pass it on.
The article discusses some of the drawbacks of relying solely on the cloud for data processing, such as potential downtime. Then it goes on to talk about the major benefits of analyzing data closer to its source, at the edge. There is a lower risk of an outage, and, more importantly, the data is processed much faster. Reduced latency is a huge benefit for those situations where even milliseconds matter. When you combine the cloud and the edge in the right proportions, businesses benefit from improved speed, better security, and a more efficient IoT system.
As you think about your next IoT project, ask yourself where should you be processing data. How much analysis should take place at the edge? How much and what types of data should go to the cloud for further processing? As always, Ed is happy to walk through these questions with you to help you make the smartest business decisions.
