As we continue to deal with COVID-19 on a daily basis, researchers are putting IoT technology to good use. A team at UMass Amherst has developed FluSense, an IoT device that can track coughing and crowd size in real time. Such a tool can help identify the occurrence of flu-like symptoms (such as COVID-19) in a large group of people.
The device is a Raspberry Pi edge device that may be able to serve as a health surveillance tool. Plans are underway to implement the device in several large public spaces.
Given the current worldwide pandemic, developments such as this hold great promise in our ability to better track and monitor disease. We are excited to see how the device performs and the impact it may have on disease detection. You can read more about FluSense here.
